Beyond the four corners of the classroom: NSTP-CWTS students dive into life-saving skills at Water Safety and Rescue Training

True learning flowed far beyond textbooks as NSTP-CWTS students of ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø – Iligan Institute of Technology (²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT) plunged into a one-day Water Safety and Rescue Training at Timoga Delamar Resort, mastering essential life-saving techniques in and around water on April 13, 2025.

The training was facilitated by Mr. Samuel Villaver, head of the Water Safety Cluster of the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT NSTP-CWTS program. Villaver emphasized the significance of the training, stating, “These are more than survival skills. They are acts of civic responsibility. We train them not just to pass a course, but to save a life when it matters most.”

The immersive session featured practical modules such as basic underwater rescue knots, an improvised flotation device using pants, throw rescue drills using buoyant aids, and water entry techniques for safe and effective rescues.

The students, many of whom had never undergone formal water safety instruction before, expressed newfound confidence and appreciation for the life-saving knowledge acquired.

One participant shared, “I used to fear deep water. Today, I jumped in not just with courage, but with purpose.”

This training is part of ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT’s broader push to embed real-world civic preparedness in its community-based NSTP-CWTS modules— preparing students to become not only socially responsible citizens, but also capable responders in times of crisis.
