To bring light into the importance of sign language and show how hearing people can be more inclusive in the community, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Services (OVCSS) and the Center for Learning and Academic Support Services (CLASS) hosted a workshop entitled, “Bridging Communication: The Power of Sign Language” at the CED Amphitheater on September 4, 2024.

Through the efforts of the invited group, the School for the Deaf in Iligan Foundation, Inc. (SDI), which was established to address the need for educational support for the deaf, ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT students were provided with an opportunity to enhance their communication skills in a series of sessions led by Ms. Charina Haynes, the founder of SDI.

In Ms. Haynes' keynote address, she emphasized that sign language is a primary means of communication for some people and not merely a substitute for spoken language. Hence, one must acknowledge that it has its own syntax, grammar, and cultural significance.

“This significance of sign language extends beyond its role as a communication tool; it is a vital component in creating an inclusive society,” she said,

After her speech, a dance number by SDI’s deaf students was presented followed by the first session of the workshop which is on Basic Sign Language. Students were enriched with an activity where they would have to read and determine the words presented by the speaker.

Two sessions took place afterwards which were on Practical Application and Interactive Awareness and Promoting Inclusivity and Awareness.
