In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at revolutionizing medical education and surgical practices, the College of Computer Studies (CCS) Extension Program and the CCS-Executive Council (EC) recently hosted the AthenaMD Virtual Surgical Planning Technologies for Mandibular Reconstruction Training Program. Held at the CCS Faculty Lounge from March 4 to 22, 2024, the program introduced participants to innovative virtual surgical planning (VSP) technologies and their applications in mandibular reconstruction.
The event commenced with an introduction by CCS-EC Board Member Kaye Q. Velarde and AthenaMD VSP Technologies for Mandibular Reconstruction Training Program Pedagogy Manager, Queenie Kate S. Cabanilla. Together, they provided a comprehensive overview of VSP technologies and the AthenaMD Web Tutorial System, which served as the backbone of the training program.
Participants were then immersed in hands-on training sessions, utilizing the AthenaMD website to explore VSP technologies extensively. Under the guidance of experts, attendees learned to navigate the intricacies of VSP software such as 3D Slicer and MeshMixer, essential tools for creating digital models of human anatomy.
Virtual surgical planning (VSP) emerged as a pivotal technique, enabling pre-surgical planning in a simulated environment. This innovative approach allows surgeons to meticulously plan complex procedures such as mandibular reconstruction with unparalleled precision.
The event welcomed esteemed guest Dr. Armando T. Isla, MD, FPSO-HNS, an ENT specialist renowned for his expertise in surgical interventions. Notably, the training program attracted 34 medical students from ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø College of Medicine and 30 VSP enthusiasts from ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-IIT. These participants, representing the future of healthcare, will integrate the knowledge gained from the program into their academic and professional endeavors.
The AthenaMD Training Program operates under the auspices of Extension Project My.MedMaker: Adoption of Medical Makerspace Technologies in Healthcare. Looking ahead, the AthenaMD Training Program aims to expand its training initiatives to encompass more complex cases in ENT. This strategic expansion underscores the program's commitment to advancing medical education and fostering innovation in surgical practices.
The AthenaMD Virtual Surgical Planning Technologies for Mandibular Reconstruction Training Program marks a significant milestone in medical education. By equipping participants with the expertise to leverage VSP technologies effectively, the program not only empowers the next generation of medical professionals but also paves the way for transformative advancements in surgical care. As healthcare continues to evolve, initiatives like AthenaMD serve as catalysts for progress, driving innovation and excellence in patient outcomes.
